Updated guidance on vehicle rental status

The Government has updated the guidance on businesses that must remain closed, clarifying that ‘vehicle rental services’ are exempt.

The Cabinet Office has confirmed that car, van, minibus and truck rental are all exempt where members are working with essential workers, goods and services.  

Customer forbearance and liquidity in the motor finance sector

The BVRLA is working with the FLA and HM Treasury to ensure that the Government can provide appropriate support for the motor finance sector as it faces a big rise in requests for payment holidays, early terminations and other adjustments to their leasing contracts. We will keep members updated when we have more news to share, but if you would like to speak to someone at the BVRLA in the meantime, please contact Amanda Brandon.

Penalty Charge Notices and Fines

We are working with a number of stakeholders to try and alleviate concerns around the administration and payment of PCNs and fines during the lockdown period.

  • Dart Charge has confirmed that late representations will be acceptable and are piloting an electronic solution. Further details will be available soon.
  • Transport for London – has confirmed that the Congestion Charge, Low Emission Zone and Ultra Low Emission Zone are suspended. If you would like a spreadsheet of penalties issued within the last two weeks, please contact Amanda Brandon.
  • London Councils – has asked boroughs to take a flexible approach to enforcement.
  • Private parking – we are working with the British Parking Association to encourage its members to accept electronic communication and a more flexible approach to enforcement.

Coronavirus Bill and what it will do

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has identified that to effectively manage a coronavirus outbreak in the UK, we need to introduce new fast-tracked legislation. The Coronavirus Act 2020 has now become law and is available on legislation.gov. Details have been published explaining what the Coronavirus Bill will do.

Business support grant funding

The new guidance on business support grant funding sets out details of eligibility and delivery of the Small Business Grants Fund (SBGF) and Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant Fund (RHLGF).

Revised Business rates guidance

Guidance has been updated to ensure that certain properties previously excluded from the relief, but that have been forced to close as a result of imposed restrictions, will now be eligible for the relief.

Commercial insurance

Most commercial insurance policies are unlikely to cover pandemics or unspecified notifiable diseases, such as COVID-19. However, those businesses which have an insurance policy that covers government ordered closure and pandemics or government ordered closure and unspecified notifiable disease should be able to make a claim, subject to the terms and conditions of their policy.

Do Hire Vehicles Have Cameras (CCTV)?

All of our vans at Redditch Vehicle Hire are fitted with the state of the art CCTV cameras to protect our customers. Although this is not a mandatory requirement for hire companies we strongly believe onboard cameras provide our customers with peace of mind and safety against other road users.

Onboard Cameras (dashcams) have been in use for years protecting drivers against a wide range of criminal activity and fraudulent insurance claims. The old dashcams used to work with an SD card that would record the footage and could be replayed back at a later time as evidence against illegal activity or abuse to other drivers along with providing valuable information for insurance companies.

This has evolved now to (FFCDC) Forward Facing Connected Dash Cams. These advanced devices use harsh driving sensors to trigger instant notifications of incidents on the road and give supporting data along with video evidence. This information is then instantly transmitted to the cloud and to our office notifying our team if one of our customers is in need of assistance. The camera will pin point its location on a GPS tracking system, notifying us of the hires exact location. This is imperative should our hirer be in need of emergency assistance following a road traffic collision.

There is also a manual trigger on the camera  that can be activated by anyone within the vehicle should they feel the need to transmit any data/footage of an incident that has occurred.

Connected dash cams use g-force sensors to detect incidents and automatically upload HD video footage to a cloud-based platform. G-force settings can be customised based on a vehicles needs, which varies based on use and vehicle type. The video feed upload process is seamless and touchless and doesn’t require manual intervention by the driver.

Drivers often have completely different memories and descriptions of an accident. With video evidence you can prove that you weren’t the driver responsible for an accident, you can save yourself from being found at fault by an insurance company and protect any excess charges that may be applied following an accident.

What do I need to do before I move house ?

There are a few things that are good practice to do when looking to move home, preparation is the key to making your move go smoother and with less stress.

As we all know moving house can be very stressful if the basic actions have not been put into place prior to the BIG day. We have put together a few hints & tips together to help you.

  • Confirm the date of you move with all parties involved in your move including (Removal companies, van hire companies, storage companies if required and local residents as not to restrict access on the day with parked cars near your home).
  • The Royal Mail Post redirection service is a great way of catching any postal information who you may have forgot to notify, this will redirect your post from your previous address to your new one. This can be set to a variation of time scales, you can do this here by clicking the link : https://www.royalmail.com/start-your-redirection
  • Notify all your utilities of the date of your move: i.e. ( Gas supplier, Electric supplier, banks, pensions companies, schools, phone companies, Water supplier, TV licensing, TV & Internet provider, Store cards & Credit Companies ) these are just a few you may have more but the redirection by Royal Mail will catch the ones that you may forget.
  • You must notify the DVLA of any change of address with all licence holders in the property and electoral role registration as this is a legal requirement.
  • Make a list of all the items that will be moving with you in your property and which room they are in is great idea. The best time to do this will be when you have a good clear out a few weeks prior to the BIG day. This will make it easier for removal companies to quote you on the move or give you a good idea of the quantity and duration you will require a hire vehicle. You don’t want to be paying for the removal of excess goods that you no longer require or need. There are many charities that would be able to make use of these items that you don’t want and help others in need. (One persons rubbish can be another persons gold).
  • Prepare your Storage boxes well in advance of your move date as they can be obtained from friends , local supermarkets, local shops, restaurants, gumtree (wanted) or just look on line and you will always be able to lay your hands on unwanted boxes. This will prevent the purchase of new ones and help towards our ever increasing risk to the environment.
  • Other useful items are brown self adhesive tape , sheets of brown paper or bubble wrap for the delicate items , sticky labels or large markers to identify the contents of each box or the location of were the box belongs in your new home i.e. ( Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom etc).
  • Pack in advance of the BIG day leaving items that are essential until the last day for example (cleaning products, vacuum , bin bags, kettle, toaster, mugs, minimum plates and cutlery, coffee, tea, sugar, toothpaste, tooth brush, shower gel, shampoo, bedding for fist night in your new home keep separate) these are just a few ideas of items to leave till very last. Always leave your minimum wardrobe items till last as anything can change with your move day at the last minute, especially if you are in a chain of buyers.
  • Notify your friends and relatives of your move date and forwarding address details. Is all there is left is to have a safe and stress free move and a memorable and enjoyable day for the whole family .

What is a Box Luton Van and how will it help me move house?

When it comes to high-volume capacities for 3.5 ton vehicles, the box Luton van or Lutons are the best option for moving house along with the Low Loaders (we will explain the Low Loaders in another article).

With the additional weight capacity and comfort systems along with the larger chasses, payloads can vary between models and manufactures. Luton Vans typically have a payload of around 800 kg – 1200kg depending on make and model. Our Ford Transit Luton that we have in stock has a payload of 1000kg and the Citroen Relay Luton has a payload of 1100kg, both of these Luton vans are more than adequate for the assistance in house removal with their load space capability.

The load length is 4100mm, Width 2000mm and internal height 2130mm with the added benefit of the electric 500kg tail lift, depending on model they will typically have 1 or 2 control units to operate the tail lift, these can be found on the external body of the box or inside the roller door. The control unit allows you to operate the tail lift from ground level to the loading bed level with great ease.

The benefits of the electric tail lifts are for the heavy items i.e. (Fridge, cooker, washing machine etc) can be loaded onto the tail lift at ground level then lifted up to the load bed providing safety to manual handling.

Our Luton Box Vans also have a fully retractable rear loading door again making it easy to operate, this roller door once shut is secured by a locking mechanism with the addition security of the electric tail lift once in the upright position preventing anyone from gaining access to the goods onboard whist the power is isolated.

The great benefit of all 3.5 ton Luton vans is they can be driven on a normal full driving licence without having to take any addition licence training, they are very easy to drive with paying additional attention to the height of the vehicle, there should always be a height restriction sign in the cab of all Luton vans for the driver to refer to when traveling underneath low bridges and signs.
